Marketers In A Box – The Ultimate Upsell

By: John Elder

This is essentially one of my favorite things of all time…”Marketers In A Box”.

Basically it was a piece of desktop software, written in visual basic, that was nothing more than a text box and submit button. It allowed people to fill out the box with a question…any question, and submit it to me.

I was essentially offering marketing advice to website owners. Anyone who’s built a website only to have nobody visit it knows how frustrating that can be.

But Marketing Consultants are expensive. So I offered “Marketers In A Box” which allowed you to get unlimited advice on marketing, seo, web promotion, pr, web design, programming questions…you name it! All for a monthly membership fee of like $20 a month.

Here’s the kicker though, I only marketed it as an upsell to my Submission-Spider software. So after you purchased my Submission-Spider software, a screen would pop up saying:

Thanks for your Submission-Spider order…here’s a special offer just for you that could skyrocket your web site’s traffic and sales, blah blah blah…

I would then go on to explain that a year of Marketers in a Box costs $240 ($20/mo) but if you clicked this little button you could get it for like $30 bucks or something like that (I don’t remember the exact numbers).

It was the highest converting upsale in the history of any company I’ve ever run. 1 in 3 customers purchased it consistently.

But the funniest part was…virtually nobody used it once they bought it. Ever. Of the hundreds of these things I sold, maybe 5 people ever cranked it up and asked a question. And the questions were usually so basic that they took 5 minutes to answer, in depth.

So basically it was all free money.
