Should Marketers Learn To Code?

By: John Elder

Most marketers I’ve come across over the years have a certain swagger to them. I don’t want to say that they think they’re better than other people, but there’s definitely a sort of “All income flows from me” kind of attitude there.

It may be warranted or not…

A lot of marketing types get complacent with their skill set. They know what they know, and what they know brings in the money – so why learn anything non-marketing related?

And maybe they’re right…

But there’s one thing that every marketer should learn because it’ll make them a better marketer.

They should learn to code.

I’m not saying they all have to go back to college and get a CS degree, but picking up a little HTML, CSS, and some PHP will stand them head and shoulders above everyone else.

And that goes double for affiliate marketers…

My recent book, “PHP Programming For Affiliate Marketers” (available thru amazon.com) is a great entry level guide to teaching affiliate marketers the basics of PHP.

I start out with a little HTML to get your feet wet. Then move into simple concepts in PHP. Things like:

  • Variables
  • Comparison Operators
  • If / Then Statements
  • For and While Loops
  • Randomizing
  • Arrays
  • Functions

After that I actually build a simple affiliate marketing website framework from the ground up, walking you through it step by step.

You’ll really learn a lot in this little 174 page book.

Heck, if nothing else – you’ll learn enough to know when your coder is giving you the run around so that you can call BS when they tell you something you want to do is too complicated.

Grab the Kindle version of the book here.

There’s no reason why a marketer shouldn’t learn to code. And now there’s no excuse!
